Fischer’s amazing life included adventures escaping Hitler and Stalin and fighting in World War II for the U.S. with his two best friends fighting for Germany and the Soviet Union. He went on to become a founding father of Alaska, helping write its constitution and connecting it with the Russian Far East.
Project: To Russia With Love, University of Alaska Press, 2012.
Collaboration: Wohlforth credited as second author ‘with’ Fischer for researching and writing the first draft. The Alaska Historical Society gave a special award for ‘Ethical Collaboration.’
“Charles is an outstanding writer, researcher, and communicator. We just spent three years working together on a book … and I found his talents awe inspiring. Charles is highly organized and disciplined. He lays out directions and gets his tasks done well and on time. He is great in dealing with broad concepts as well as specific details. Behind his self-effacing personality are a brilliant mind and a strong character. He functions phenomenally well with other people. He is most likable and has a delightful sense of humor. To me, Charles was an inspiring and delightful partner, a true collaborator. I value and respect him, and recommend him without reservation.”
