Lisa Murkowski has served in the U.S. Senate since 2002. She won re-election in 2022, the only Republican senator to vote for the impeachment of Donald Trump who did so, and she remains an independent voice in her party.
Project: Far From Home: An Alaska Senator Faces the Extreme Climate of Washington D.C., Forum Books, 2025
Collaboration: Charles is credited on the cover of this book written from the Senator’s first-person perspective.
“After Charles and I started working together in 2019, the process of gathering stories happened in real time, doing interviews right amid the events the book would cover, sometimes in Washington, at his home in New Jersey or mine in Alaska, or on the phone or via Zoom, and sometimes as I dictated into voice memo – we did nearly fifty of these sessions. Charles also conducted many other interviews and collected extensive research separately to add dimension and color and to verify our perceptions. … It took us awhile as events kept coming in the way: an impeachment, a pandemic, an insurrection, another impeachment, a very active legislative period, and then another re-election campaign in 2022. … Finally, he wrote the first drafts that we worked with together over many hours of editing and shaping the manuscript. This was a satisfying and productive five-year partnership, and I thank Charles and his wife, Sarah Rowland for their friendship (and good dinners).”
